The following are some of the critical results that NUMAT achieved as of June 2012, the six-year project end.

NUMAT mother and babyHIV Counseling & Testing (HCT)

  • Supported more than 100 sites, plus outreach sites (camps, hard-to-reach areas, and lower level facilities) to provide HCT for 841,621 individuals
  • Trained 1,052 service providers in HCT
  • Established and supported 10 post-test clubs to conduct weekly activities

Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT)

  • Counseled, tested, and produced results for 351,139 expectant mothers
  • Provided antiretroviral drugs for prevention of mother-to-child transmission to 16,549 HIV-positive expectant mothers and 7,981 infants born to HIV-positive women
  • Trained 1,535 service providers in PMTCT
  • Established 15 family support groups

Antiretroviral Therapy (ART)

  • Supported 34 ART sites to provide 11,799 clients with antiretroviral treatment for the first time
  • Currently providing ART to 13,864 clients
  • Trained 368 service providers on the management of antiretroviral treatment
  • Conducted 57,541 CD4 tests, with all new clients having a baseline CD4 test

Prevention Services

  • Conveyed ABC prevention messages to 877,300 individuals, 115,304 of whom were most-at-risk-populations
  • Reached 543,652 individuals with AB prevention messages
  • Distributed more than 1,800,000 condoms at more than 600 outlets
  • Provided 221 gender-based violence survivors with post-exposure prophylaxis

Safe Male Circumcision

  • Trained 74 service providers on male circumcision technique
  • Circumcised 1,331 men in established facilities and outreach camps

Wrap-Around Services

  • Supported 140 PLHIV as network support agents and attached them to 60 health facilities
  • Enabled more than 35,000 PLHIV to access a range of wrap-around services and linked 1,968 to livelihood support
  • Supported more than 6,500 PLHIVs with basic care package kits
  • Conducted home visits to more than 46,000 PLHIVs
  • Provided 97 PLHIVs with free legal aid and 91 with will-writing skills


  • Assisted five districts (Kitgum, Pader, Dokolo, Gulu, and Amuru) with developing HIV strategic plans in accordance to the National HIV/AIDS Strategic Plan

  • Coordinated CB-DOTS and TB/HIV collaborative activities to all project districts
  • Counseled, tested, and provided HIV results to 19,272 TB patients
  • Provided cotrimoxazole prophylaxis to more than 90% of TB/HIV co-infected patients

Laboratory Support

  • Selected, procured, and distributed laboratory equipment to 75 laboratories
  • Refurbished laboratories and counseling rooms in 28 health units from all project districts


  • Distributed 155,000 (above a target of 150,000) long-lasting insecticide-treated nets to ANCs for pregnant women
  • Procured more than 80,000 rapid diagnostic tests for malaria diagnosis and facilitated testing roll-out in 41 health lower-level health facilities
  • Provided intermittent preventive treatment for malaria to 266,021 expectant mothers


  • Aired 84 radio shows about health-related topics on local radio stations
  • Distributed 65,734 assorted IEC/BCC materials (leaflets and posters for information, education, and communication) to 90 health facilities

Human Resources for Health

  • Inducted 372 newly-recruited health workers from various districts into civil service.
  • Coordinated the association of 447 medical school students to peripheral sites, from Makerere University, Gulu School of Clinicians, and Gulu University

Strategic Information

  • Trained 355 people in data management and use of strategic information
  • Conducted 3 LQAS surveys and 1 health facility assessment
  • Disseminated 77 scientific papers at national and international conferences
